Training Resources

As you gain more belts and stripes, usually the time you have to train between each grading increases.

This is to make sure you have enough training and are not only physically, but mentally ready before you are ready to receive the next belt/stripe.

White Belt

White belt is a symbol of innocence. You are a blank canvas ready to fill with knowledge. It is the first step of your taekwondo journey. 

White Belt Pattern - Saju Jirugi

Yellow Tip Pattern - Chong Ji

Yellow Belt

Yellow belt is a representation of the earth in which the roots of your taekwondo take hold. This is where you start to build the fundamentals of the art and work on a strong foundation.

Yellow Belt Pattern - Dan Gun

Green Tip Pattern - Do San

Green Belt

Representing that your knowledge is starting to grow, much like a sapling. Basic techniques are starting to be understood and you will start to show good technique.

Green Belt Pattern -Won Hyu

Blue Tip Pattern - Yul Gok

Blue Belt

Your ability is now starting to really improve, the blue belt symbolises the sky which the plant grows towards, there is a clear goal that is being reached for. Heavy focus on self-control is also required at this time.

Blue Belt Pattern - Joong Gun

Brown Tip Pattern - Toi Gye

Brown Belt

Representing the strength of a fully mature tree, a brown belt has developed very strong technique and ability. At this point you will work further on developing more control, advanced techniques and perfecting any basics that may be lagging.

Brown Belt Pattern - Hwa Rang

Black Tip Pattern - Choong Moo

Purple Belt

The purple belt is awarded to junior members who are not yet old enough to be awarded a black belt. The purple belt shows and understanding of the art and is a lighter version of the black belt.

Purple belt enables us to reward junior members for the hard work they have put in as they continue their physical and mental development on the journey to achieving a black belt.

Black Belt

The opposite of white, a black belt represents maturity, a solid understanding and proficiency in the basic techniques in the art. Black belts are considered to be true students of the art. 

Black Belt Ranks

At this time the student has developed strong ability across a wide range of techniques. It is expected that black belts will work on building a greater understanding of the mechanics of techniques and learn to analyse their own technique to make improvements; not just be instructed. The student should concentrate on perfecting the basics that they have learned, while also developing more complicated techniques. At this time students will also assist instructors and are allowed to be an Instructor of their own class (1st Dan and above). 

Purple Belt (Students 12 and under) – Pattern: Gwang-Gae

Black Belt (Students 13-17 years old) – Patterns: Gwang-Gae & Po-Eun

1st Dan (18 Years and Over) – Patterns: Gwang-Gae, Po-Eun & Ge-Baek

2nd Dan (Min 2 years on 1st Dan) – Patterns: Choong-Jang, Ko-Dang & Sam-Il

Senior Black Belt Ranks

A Senior Black Belt has mastered the basics in taekwondo including basic techniques, stances and movement. Further growth now comes from minor tweaks, improvement in more advanced techniques and the pursuit of a deeper understanding of the art. Senior black belts will have demonstrated not just their own ability, but the ability to help others develop and earn their own black belts.

3rd Dan (Min 3 years on 2nd Dan) – Patterns: Choi-Yong & Yoo-Sin

4th Dan (Min 4 years on 3rd Dan) – Patterns: Se-Jong & Ul-Ji

5th Dan (Min 5 years on 4th Dan) – Pattern: Tong-Il

Master Black Belt Ranks

6th Dan – 8th Dan

Students who achieve this rank have been an active black belt for approximately 20 years. They are very knowledgeable. The student is expected to pursue further knowledge about taekwondo with little or no oversight and is responsible for developing all black belts.

Grandmaster Rank

9Th Dan

The ultimate rank in taekwondo, there are very few who have made it this far and they are considered to be the greatest experts on the art of taekwondo. The student who achieves a grandmaster rank will have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to taekwondo and will take responsibility for the development of all practitioners in the school.
